Fundamental Engineers Application

Application Process
Submit the application below to accomplish either of the following:
- Get certified as an Engineer Intern
- Get approval to take the PE exam prior to the completion of your experience requirement (aka decoupling)
Fundamental Engineers Exam Approval
There is no requirement as to when the examination in the Fundamentals of Engineering is taken, other than it is required to be successfully passed before licensure, with the following exceptions:
- See Section 2817(a)(8) of the Delaware Professional Engineers’ Act for FE Waiver eligibility.
- Applicants that are using the engineering experience and examination pathway (licensure without degree) must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering examination prior to taking the Principles and Practice of Engineering examination. See Section 2817(a)(5) of the Delaware Professional Engineers’ Act for details about this pathway .

Once you pass the FE exam, read below to complete the engineer intern certification process.
Engineer Intern Certification
If you have successfully passed the FE exam and would like to apply for certification as an Engineer Intern, complete the application below. Note: While DAPE does not require Engineer Intern Certification to be licensed as a P.E., some jurisdictions do have this requirement. Laws and requirements vary from State to State, and you are responsible for researching requirements if your intention is to get licensed elsewhere. Even if you have passed the FE exam, or have been certified as an Engineer Intern in another jurisdiction, the following conditions will apply for Engineer Intern Certification in Delaware:
- If your undergraduate degree is in a science-related to engineering, your transcripts will be reviewed at our next Examining Committee meeting prior to approval.
- If your undergraduate degree is from a foreign institution, we require an NCEES credentials evaluation in place of an official transcript. Once received, your credentials evaluation will be reviewed at our next Examining Committee meeting prior to approval.
While graduate degrees may reduce your experience requirement when applying for PE licensure, we still require verification of your undergraduate degree.
Decoupling
We do allow separating the timing of your PE exam and engineering experience as long as you have met your education requirements. This is commonly referred to as “Decoupling.” If you choose to take that route, you’ll need to apply below for Engineer Intern Certification. This is the process we have to verify your education, so you’ll need to do this even if you are certified in another state. All of the engineer intern certification requirements listed above apply.
